Beach House Design Competition

Bournemouth UK

The traditional English beach house is quite unique in that it is a miniature of a gabled house, colourful and laid in rows next to each other in front of the coast. Can a beach house then be re-interpreted without being influenced by this strong tradition and only by the imagery of the very concept of the beach and the ocean?

The concept was based on capturing the essence and imagery associated with the ocean and the beach rather than the typical stereo type of a cabled roof house. The value of an architecture is its ability to trigger  our imagination as Juhanii Pallasmaa once said. Here, the building form and structure could be based on a fish’s mouth, a hull of a boat or even washed up barrels along the beach.
